Sweat beaded on Sarah's forehead as she paced the length of the living room, her phone clutched in her hand. The air in the apartment felt thick, suffocating, despite the open window. The constant drip of the faucet in the bathroom amplified the tension that coursed through her. A dog. Liam wanted a dog.

She bit at her thumbnail, the metallic taste of blood filling her mouth. The thought of dog hair, chewed furniture, early morning walks…it was overwhelming. He didn’t understand. She had to focus on her career. A dog wouldn’t fit into her carefully crafted schedule.

He’d said he would take care of it all. He just didn’t understand her world. She stopped pacing and slammed the phone back onto the table, the abrupt noise jarring the silent air. It felt as though she could not catch her breath.
